Still no real rain but just assume that every day has a chance of a stray thunderstorm because it’s pretty much the case. If you’ve lived in North Carolina, and especially, this area, for at least a year, you know that the weather marches to its own drum this time of year. (Weather from Accuweather, commentary is my own).

Water Restrictions Remain in Place
  • It’s becoming harder to write something entertaining about the same topic week after week but this is important! Stage 1 water restrictions remain in place. These restrictions aim to reduce water usage by 10% across the town so interpret them accordingly. In light of Fuquay-Varina’s broader water issues, being careful in our usage of water in general may be valuable.

🤔 Planning Ahead

Independence Day, Celebrating the United States’ 250th Anniversary

Plan on heading out on Wednesday July 1 to South Park for Fuquay-Varina’s Independence Day celebration! There will be live music, crafts, giveaways, a huge number of food trucks and ice cream trucks, and loads and loads of fireworks! Gates open to the fields and such at 6:00 pm and fireworks are at 9:15 ish (weather dependent).

Get there early and hang out to get a good spot!

RecTrac - New Registration System

The Arts Center and Parks and Recreation departments are moving to a new registration system called RecTrac. Accounts on the old system are usable over the summer but you will need to make a new account for fall registration by July 1. Good news is that you only need one account across departments.

Open Submission - Fuquay Film Festival

The film festival itself is not until November but submissions are wide open! Early bird deadline for film submission is until July 15. Regular deadline is August 15, then late deadline is Sept 15. All appropriate genres are accepted and all film makers are welcome to submit. There is even a specific category for high school and college students so don’t hold back!

🔍Getting to Know Fuquay-Varina🔎

As our home, we live, work, play, eat, and drive around Fuquay-Varina but how well do we know it? This is to introduce you to somewhere you’ve never been to or, perhaps, never even heard of and encourage you to get out to it!

This Week: Quaint Plaza

You’ve certainly driven past it but did you realize that the warehouse on Broad St is no longer vacant? Of course, Mason Jar Lager Company enjoys the back space with its open set up, picnic tables, playground, swings, and, beer. If you’re old school, then you’ll know this space as Stephens Hardware but now the front building has gone from largely empty space, to a bustling mall of shops, hang outs, and businesses! If you haven’t explored it or didn’t even know about it, here’s your guide!

This is a one stop shop if there ever was one. Find unique and hard to get ingredients, as well as, specialty made food. On top of all that, in the back, you can find a broad array of meat, a cafe for order, and ready made take home food.

This now classic Fuquay-Varina ice cream shop moved across the street and now welcomes you into Quaint Plaza with its whimsical cats, rich coffee, and delicious ice cream! As an aside, we’ve ordered their ice cream cakes and they’re amazing!

A self pour taproom, Hoppy Tales lets you have as much or as little of a given beer, wine, prosecco as you’d like to try! Simply get a bracelet, tap the wall, and pour. They also have cocktails, friendly hosts, and a great space for all kinds of events.

Virtu Alley’s entire goal is to immerse you into strange and wonderful new worlds. For those who don’t want to wear a headset, you can jump into one of their simulators or play classic controller games. I’m not aware of any other gaming lounge that is devoted to virtual reality and its worth checking out!

I must confess that I have not had a chance to check out the newest addition to the plaza but the pictures and menu look amazing. Momo are dumplings served in Nepalese and Himalayan cuisine and this authentic, family run station looks like the place to get them! (More to come after some serious sampling)

The plaza is more than food, QIQ offers K-12 tutoring a wide range of topics, as well as, summer camps and college prep and admission counseling. Luckily, its in a pretty cool spot to hang out while your child learns!

Older than the plaza proper, Better Strength has been located in the bottom floor of the plaza warehouse for a long time. Founded by Corey Murtha its goal is to help each person find their personal fitness experience.

BEATECH is an American based wholesale importer and distributor of fresh food and dry items specifically from Africa. Sourcing from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda if you’re looking for something authentically African you’ll likely find it through them.

All of this in one place (and yes there’s plenty of parking) and there’s even more coming!

FV Trivia Answer: Granville Wilt. Caused by the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, in the 1880’s this disease destroyed crops in the northern piedmont causing a major shift to the dryer soil of the coastal plains.

Till next week!
