Hello Fuquay-Varina!
Sunday is the OFFICIAL start of summer but wow does it feel like deep summer already. Not to be kept indoors, Fuquay-Varina is all kinds of out and about this week! Celebrate Juneteenth downtown Friday and Saturday. Chill out with cigars and vinyl. And don’t forget Father’s Day (I’m partial ok?) this Sunday!
If you notice something missing, fear not, the Parks + Outdoors section has left our Sunday edition but may show up again soon somewhere else (hint hint!).

First half of the week looks like its going to be more of what we’ve had (I’m really hoping that least one of these thunderstorms actually happens!). Second half of the week promises some relief, but we’ll see. Be careful out there! (from Accuweather).

🚶‍➡️ Around Town

Juneteenth
  • On Friday, June 19, celebrate and learn about Juneteenth with musical performances, art exhibits, cultural storytelling and more at the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center. Hosted by M.A.N.iFest and BrainSTEMology, this year’s theme is “Freedom Rooted. Future Bound!”

Water Restrictions Remain in Place
  • If you’ve been outside for 30 seconds, you appreciate why water restrictions are still in place! Due to the ongoing drought conditions and extreme levels of unseasonal heat, the town is emphasizing that Stage 1 water restrictions remain in place!

🤔 Planning Ahead

Fall Youth Sports Registration

Registration for fall youth sports is here! Registration is open for residents and opens to non-residents this Monday, June 15 at 8:00 am.

Open Submission - Fuquay Film Festival

The film festival itself is not until Novemeber but submissions are wide open! Early bird deadline for film submission is until July 15. Regular deadline is August 15, then late deadline is Sept 15. All appropriate genres are accepted and all film makers are welcome to submit. There is even a specific category for high school and college students so don’t hold back!

RecTrac - New Registration System

The Arts Center and Parks and Recreation departments are moving to a new registration system called RecTrac. Accounts on the old system are usable over the summer but you will need to make a new account for fall registration by July 1. Good news is that you only need one account across departments.

🔍Who is Fuquay-Varina?🔎

The same five questions with someone from around the town who helps make Fuquay-Varina what it is today.

This Week: Ricardo Picozzi

Tell us a bit about yourself, including, how long have you been in Fuquay-Varina, and what first brought you here?

I am from Brazil and my wife from Argentina. We came to the US in 2015 working for IBM in Somers-NY. In 2022, our kids were applying to college, and NC out-of-state tuition was much more affordable than in-state in CT where we lived, and since IBM had a big office in RTP, and some of my team and my wife's team was also here, then it was the decision breaker. We started looking for houses in Cary, Durham area, but ended up here in Fuquay, which we got to love after a while.

What’s one local place, event, or activity you think deserves more love?

The [Mineral] Springs Park. It is nice during the Christmas time, but I think it could have more life off season.

If you had a free afternoon in Fuquay-Varina, how would you spend it?

Massage at Savanah Bodywork -> Lunch at Casa Amigos -> Ice Cream on Hello Fresh and end with Coffee at Stick Boy. These are my favorite places here.

What’s something about Fuquay-Varina you didn’t fully appreciate at first - but do now?

It was too commercial, especially on Cars sales, parts and mechanics, and the Walmart was awful, now it's a completely a new Walmart.

What would you tell someone who just moved here last month?

Schools in Wake county are great, South main street is awesome, and the water park for the kids is great.

FV Trivia Answer: The Fuquay Springs fire department was formed in 1925 with its first station located on S. Fuquay St.

Till next week!
