🤔 Advanced Planning

RecTrac - New Registration System

The Arts Center and Parks and Recreation departments are moving to a new registration system called RecTrac. Accounts on the old system are usable over the summer but you will need to make a new account for fall registration by July 1. Good news is that you only need one account across departments.

🌳 Parks + Outdoors

Featuring: Fleming Loop Recreational Park

  • With such gorgeous weather coming in next week, we felt it made sense to highlight a park with awesome trails, massive fields, and a seriously great playground.

  • Bring a picnic and set up shop at the shelters while the kids run and play, Fleming Loop can certainly become a day trip!

  • Our kids love the playground and I must admit, I really wish I’d had one of those climbing spheres when I was younger!

  • Paved walking paths make it an easy place to walk (run?) with a stroller or simply have an easy afternoon walk.

🔍Who is Fuquay-Varina?🔎

The same five questions with someone from around the town who helps make Fuquay-Varina what it is today.

This Week: Rebecca Rathe

Tell us a bit about yourself, including, how long have you been in Fuquay-Varina, and what first brought you here?

My family and I first came to Fuquay in 2019 because of the (at the time) very affordable housing and we wanted a family-friendly area to raise our kids. We really love the small-town community vibe and have loved raising our family here.

What’s one local place, event, or activity you think deserves more love?

I really wish the town and community as a whole embraced an inclusive initiative the way some surrounding towns have, but I am VERY proud of our little town's PRIDE celebration. I've proudly taken part in sponsoring the event, "strutting" downtown, and enjoying the vendor market and event every year since it started. We also really look forward to the downtown festivals like the tree lighting and Celebrate Fuquay events.

If you had a free afternoon in Fuquay-Varina, how would you spend it?

If it's not too hot, a nice drink and a sticky bun from Stick Boy and a walk around Mineral Springs Park is absolutely lovely. We also have some really fun stuff downtown that my kids love, most especially Yellow Bird Comics. Our favorite place to eat in town as a family is Fiesta Time, the owners and staff are SO friendly and always treat us like great friends. Nils is a personal favorite of mine also. And we also love, love, love spending time at the library!

What’s something about Fuquay-Varina you didn’t fully appreciate at first - but do now?

As much as I loved the small-town community vibe for raising our kids, there was some trepidation about moving to a (at the time) more rural small town in NC as a more liberal-minded queer person. But I've found a lot of support and friendship in this community that proves we can overcome our differences by being open and friendly with one another.

What would you tell someone who just moved here last month?

Wherever you're going, leave early. Our little town has outgrown itself and you'll notice traffic is a bit crazy. But it's worth it. And don't overlook the many locally-owned small businesses. There's a lot of great spots to eat and shop no matter where your interests lie.

FV Trivia Answer: Virginia “Varina” Arey was J.D.’s pen pal during the Civil War and, yes, they married, lived happily ever after, and had a massive impact on our town.

Till next week!
