🌳 Parks + Outdoors

Featured Park: Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park
  • With little happening in January at our parks, we’d like to humbly remind you to check out Fuquay-Varina’s amazing parks!

  • Carroll Johnson Park: located at 301 Wagstaff Road Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526

  • One of our favorites, this park has 2 miles of trails (with plenty off trail!) plus bridges and a really cool amphitheater!

  • Bit of History: Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park was originally a 20-acre tract of land donated to the Town of Fuquay-Varina in 1992 by the late Mayor Alfred Johnson and his wife Carroll Howard Johnson. Eight acres were donated by Horace Tart in 1998, enlarging the park to its current 28 acres.

🔍 Who is Fuquay-Varina?

Five questions with someone who helps make Fuquay-Varina what it is today.

This week: (me!) John Burnor, An excited local trying to start a local newsletter!

Five Questions

How long have you been in Fuquay-Varina, and what first brought you here?

My wife, eldest son (now 9), and I moved here in November 2020 from Durham looking for more space and a small town vibe. While we miss Durham and Chapel Hill, we have absolutely fallen in love with Fuquay-Varina and love raising our family (now 5 of us) here.

What’s one local place, event, or activity you think deserves more love?

Its multiple locations but Fuquay-Varina’s schools are fantastic! And you can’t have schools without teachers. We moved here in part because we knew Wake County had good schools but F-V’s schools are one step above. The teachers, administration, and every one connected to these schools across the town need a major shout out!

If you had a free afternoon in Fuquay-Varina, how would you spend it?

My favorite time of year around town is late spring. Afternoon at the park, we love the playground at Fleming Loop. Then, hang out at the Mason Jar brewery where the kids will play on the playground and the adults can chill. We tend to lose track of time and typically order Anna’s pizza to be delivered to the brewery! Late night winddown, if we have a babysitter, would almost definitely be a cocktail at Moonlight or a glass of wine at Lucci Blues.

What’s something about Fuquay-Varina you didn’t fully appreciate at first - but do now?

There is so much going on here! New restaurants and businesses are popping up all over the place. There are so many parks and places to visit. We moved here, in part, due to proximity to Raleigh and RTP but, frankly, we almost never feel the need to travel very far!

What would you tell someone who just moved here last month?

(Subscribe to FV Dash!!)

But, seriously, look out for town events! Fuquay-Varina has so many festivals, parades, and downtown events that you never feel very far from the next one. We missed so many in our first few years.

Did You Know? The dash is official. In 1963, Varina and Fuquay Springs, two separately incorporated towns, saw a union as advantageous to their shared goals of marrying agriculture with industrial growth and merged to become: Fuquay-Varina.

Till next week!

John + Alyse
